The boys State Meet effort was led by Zach Zingsheim who became the first Cougar XC runner to win a State Championship. Zach was joined on the all-state stand by freshman Keenan Rebera and seniors Jimmy Hicks and Joe Marrah. The All-State honor was the second for Hicks in his career.

The boys also repeated as regional champions and moved up to first in the CAAC White conference after six straight second place finishes.

The girls team had two State Meet qualifiers. Emma Frost came home in 7th place and earned all-state honors. Amy Hicks finished in 84th place.

The girls finished in 4th place at regionals and missed the state finals for only the 3rd time in 13 years. They did however finish in 4th place and missed States by only 4 points. It was a great effort by the girls in an extremely hard regional. The girls finished 2nd in the CAAC White conference.

Cougar Track - AWESOME in 2011

REGIONAL CHAMPIONS 2009, 20010, 2011

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XqlaYvmBtVg/Th4ZQ3aoBPI/AAAAAAAAAQI/50JolA_CvmU/s320/girls%2Bregional%2B3%2Btime.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5628964361803924722" />

State Meet
The State Finals was a busy day as the Cougars were represented in 10 of the 17 boys events and 8 of the 17 girls events.

The highlight of the day came in the boys 800 meter relay as the team of Caporale, Zingsheim, Wilson and Macksood finished as State Champions. The boys also had two second place finishes in the 3200 meter relay and the 1600 meter relay. Zach Zingsheim also finished 5th in the 400. All of this added up to 30 points and placed the boys in 4th place overall. The 4X4 race was a thriller that saw Frankenmuth edge the the Cougars by a tenth of a second as the Cougars set yet another school record. The time for Lansing Catholic was the 6th fastest In the State Finals for all classes and the 3rd fastest ever run in D3. In that race Zach split a 48.8 and Connor ran a 49.9. In the past 11 years only three boys have run sub 50 splits for LCHS in the 4X4 (Matt Kirvan being the 3rd). Zach Zingsheim ended the day earning all-state in four events. In the 4X800 the foursome of Louis Savona, jimmy Hicks, Zach Zingsheim and Austin Winter finished 2nd – it was the second time the group had earned all-state.

The girls team highlights were a brilliant third place finish in the 400 relay for the team of Monica Lopez, Hannah Sailar, MaryAlice Fata and Jamie Holtham. Holtham capped off the race with an awesome leg moving the Cougars past about four teams in the final stretch. Megan Heeder finished 4th in the 3200 meter run, Emma Frost 8th in the 1600 and Hannah Sailar 7th in the pole vault – with all earning all-state honors and Sailar setting a new school record of 9’10”.

Without a doubt the most inspiring performance of the day came from Louis Savona. Louis had been out since the week of regionals and had not run in any of the big meets and in fact had not even been able to run due to a foot injury he suffered the week of regionals. The night before regionals he ran on it some and was still in pain and limping badly. The morning of the State Meet he was running a little better and it was determined literally minutes before the race that he would run lead-off leg in the 3200 meter relay. He actually led the race through the first lap and hung on through a painful last 100 meters and handed off having run a remarkable leg of 2:03. The Cougars surged to the lead and eventually finished second to Frankenmuth. It was a display of guts and toughness and desire to run in the big race that everyone from Lansing Catholic that was there understood and was amazed by. It is one thing to drag yourself on to the track after an injury that has kept you from running for over two weeks, but it is quite another to do it on the biggest stage in the biggest race of the season and then to do it that well. It was AWESOME!

Honor Roll
The Honor Roll meet was the day after the rescheduled league final and only three days before the State Meet so the Cougars, despite having numerous qualifiers for the Lansing Area All-Star meet, ran in only a limited number of races. Individually Emma Frost won the 1600 and Megan Heeder won the 3200 meter run and Austin Winter finished 2nd in the 1600. In the relays the Cougars ran only the premier event – the 1600 relay - for boys and girls. The girls team of Monica Lopez, Lena Minniti, MaryAlice Fata and Jamie Holtham ran their best time of the year and were second to only Fowler. Beating the likes of East Lansing and Everett and others. In the boys race the foursome of Connor Caporale, Matt Macksood, Aaron Wilson and Zach Zingsheim again broke the school record and finished only behind eventual D2 State Champion East Lansing. Also competing individually were Jimmy Hicks in the 800, Hannah Sailar in the pole vault and high jump and Erin Fields in the high jump.

The two efforts in the 4X4 once again proved that on the girls and boys side the Cougars are among the areas elite.

CAAC White Final
On the Tuesday following the MITCA meet and the long Memorial Day weekend the CAAC White division finally concluded its season. Of the six league meets on the schedule only one was contested on the day and place that the original schedule indicated. Every other meet was either postponed or moved to accommodate earlier postponements and even the league final meet included an hour rain delay. But after all the waiting the Cougars were ready when it came time to earn all–league honors. Both teams went into the final meet in 2nd place in the league with a 4-1 mark and when the meet was over both teams had finished 2nd and secured league runner-up status. The girls meet however did come down to the final race where the Cougars went in trailing Lakewood by 4 points. The Cougars ran away with the 4X4 and the Vikings came home in 4th to give the Cougars enough to finish 2nd in the meet and avoid a tie for league runner-up.
The boys team despite dominating the medal stand finished behind Williamston. Of the 17 events contested in the meet the Cougars remarkably won 9 of them leaving 8 for the other 5 teams to divide. The Cougar boys were winners in the 200, where Aaron Wilson set a school record of 22.64, the 300 hurdles (Caporale), the 400 (Zingsheim), the 800 (Hicks) and the 3200 (Winter) plus all four relays.

The girls team got winning efforts in the 4X4 relay and the 3200 meter run from Megan Heeder. Perhaps the best efforts came from Emma Frost and Megan Heeder in the 1600 where they went 2-3 both in times of 5:15. The breakout performance of the meet came from Erin Fields in the long jump. She followed up her 7th place finish at regionals by jumping a foot PR of 15-8 which sets her up nicely going into her sophomore year. Another great effort came from Emily Lemmer in the 300 hurdles. Just 1 year after going over her first hurdle she placed at regionals and earned all-league, again setting her up well for a strong 2012 season. Running her last meet for the Cougars was Hunter Puma who was one of only two seniors in the school to compete in a sport every season for four years. Her freshman year even included softball in addition to track. She consistently placed highly in the hurdles throughout her track career and was a varsity runner on some very good cross country teams – her consistency and toughness will be missed next year.

MITCA
After the thrilling regional meet the teams were scheduled to compete five days later in the league finals. That meet was postponed to the following Tuesday so after a week of rain and no meet the Cougars were finally back in action at the MITCA team meet.

The MITCA meet features 16 of the best full teams in the D3. Our runners were bit sluggish after the long layoff but still came up with some good efforts. Couars boys who finished in the top 10 were Aaron Wilson, third in the 200, Zach Zingsheim and Jimmy Hicks seventh and ninth in the 800, Austin Winter fifth in the 1600, Jimmy Hicks and Austin Winter fourth and sixth in the 3200, Connor Caporale fifth in the 300 hurdles, Dan Liesman third in the shot put and seventh in the discus. The boys as usual were strong in the relays winning the 4X2, 2nd in the 4X8 and third in the 4X1 and 4X4. Cougar girls in the top 10 were Jamie Holtham fifth in the 200, Emma Frost seventh in the 800 and third in the 1600, Megan Heeder second in the 3200 and fourth in the 1600, Hannah Sailar and Erin Fields tied for ninth in the high jump and Sailar ninth in the pole vault.

Regionals
Regionals as has become the custom turned out to be a great day/evening for LCHS track and field. The girls captured their third straight regional title and the boys finished 2nd and set three school records along the way.

Relays have become the staple of the LCHS program and their dominance was on display as the Cougar boys and girls won 7 of the 8 relays and qualified for states as well in the one they did not win. The boys set new school records in the 4X4 and the 4X2 as well as winning the 4X1 and 4X8. All four relays were running without their usual anchor legs as Louis Savona was out for the whole meet with a foot injury and Cedric Lee went out after the finals of the 100. On the girls side Monica Lopez led off all four relays and three of them were winners and the lone non-winner the 4X8 ran a season best. The night was capped off by the boys and girls teams both destroying the field in the 4X4.

Individual winners were Emma Frost in the 1600 and Megan Heeder in the 3200 for the girls, Dan Liesman in the shot put and Zach Zingsheim in the 400 in a school record time of 50.14. Other state meet qualifiers were Frost in the 3200, Heeder in the 1600, Jamie Holtham in the 200 and Hannah Sailar in the pole vault. Boys qualifiers were Aaron Wilson in the 200, Jimmy Hicks in the 800, Austin Winter in the 1600 and Connor Caporale in the 300 hurdles.

Cougar Track in the News

Lansing State Journal Coverage

http://www.lansingstatejournal.com/article/20110421/COLUMNISTS05/104210335/Kimmerly-Williamston-s-Clem-headed-Wisconsin?odyssey=tab|topnews|text|Sports

TRACK SEASON IS HERE !

GREAT START AT MSU Both teams had excellent results in the biggest meets of the season.
Regionals began on Friday and didn't end until Monday but it turned out to be a meet to remember for much more than the two-day delay. The girls repeated as Regional Champs and remarkably scored in every event and won by a convincing margin again. Regional Champions for the girls team were Sara Wegener in the discus and the shot put (breaking her own school record with a throw of 36-1.75), Megan Heeder in the 1600 and 3200 and the 400 relay team of Annie Hanis, Jessica Doody, Monica Lopez and Jamie Holtham. Other state meet qualifiers were Emma Frost in the 1600 and 3200, the 3200 meter relay team, the 1600 meter relay team and the 800 meter relay.
The boys team also had a spectatular meet with the Zach Zingsheim winning the 800 meters and the 1600 meter relay winning a thrilling race. The 400 meter relay team finished second to qualify for States but in the process set a new school record. Also qualifying for States was Louis Savona who was third in the 800 and the 3200 meter relay team.
League Meet
Just 41 hours after the regional meet ended the Cougars were back in action in the CAAC White league meet. Depite the short turnaround the Cougars came out ready and had a great meet for both teams. The girls backed up their 4-1 dual meet record by finishing second and locking up a league runner-up finish for the second straight year While the boys who came into the meet in fourth place surprised the teams above them by finishing second in the meet (for the 2nd time in three years) and finishing in third place overall. League champions for the girls were the 3200 meter relay team of Catherine Swiderski, Annie Fata, Allie Brown and Megan Heeder, and Megan again in the 3200 and 1600 meter runs. League Champions for the boys were Zach Zingsheim in the 800, the 400 meter relay team of Jon Lopez, Jack Swain, Matt Macksood and Cedric Lee and the 1600 meter team of Zach Zingsheim, Greg Rybinin, Matt Macksood and Louis Savona.
MITCA
Just 3 days after the league meet the girls team competed in the MITCA team state meet against the top teams in Division 3. The girls finished in 8th place in the 14 team field and had many solid efforts. the highlight of the meet was Megan Heeder who ran three great races in the 85 degree heat. She started her day with a season best 2:28 in the 3200 meter relay then ran another PR of 5:12 in the 1600 and capped it off with a dominating performance in the 3200 meter run where she set the MITCA meet record of 11:07 while easily beating a field of very good runners which included two-time XC State Champion Devan John of Allendale.
Honor Roll
The stretch of big meets continued with the Lansing Area Honor Roll meet. The Cougars performed very well in the area all-star meet. The girls 3200 meter relay lowered their season best to 10:07 and finished on the medal stand with a thrid place finish. Megan Heeder who anchored the relay finished in second place in the 1600, Sara Wegener in 4th place in the shot put, Emma Frost in 5th place in the 3200 in a PR of 11:46 and the girls 1600 meter relay was 5th in a season best 4:12. The boys 3200 meter relay team was 4th and the 1600 meter relay was 7th in a season best 3:29.
State Meet
The season ended at the State Meet with the Cougars performing very well once again with four relays earning All-State honors as well as two individuals. Megan Heeder led the way by earning All-State recognition in two events finishing second in the 3200 meter run and third in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:10. In the 1600 meter run freshman, Emma Frost also earned All-State by finishing in 8th. Emma also just missed a second top eight finish by coming in 10th in the 3200 meter run.
The top relay effort of the day came from the boys 400 meter team which won their heat and finished fourth overalll and lowered their own school record to 44.08. The boys 3200 meter team ran a spectacular race finishing in 6th but with an excellent time of 8:05. the boys 1600 realy team ran a season best of 3:28 and finished 8th and the girls 1600 relay team finished in the money as well with a time of 4:12 for eigth place.
Summary
A track season can become grueling at times with a lot of meets in a short period of time but in the end that kind of schedule paid off when the big meets came and both the boys and girls teams had strong meets in all the most important meets. Some teams "save themselves" and rest while the Cougars pride themselves on never backing down from tough competition and never taking the easy way out. When it is time to perform the Cougars are ready for all the big meets not just some of them. Toughness developed throughout the season is a big reason why.
The boys team went from a team that won no dual meets in 2009 and finished 6th in the league meet and had only two senior varsity athletes returing to a the second best team in the league. Jack Swain was second in the league in the long jump as a freshman, Cedric Lee was one of the conferences best sprinters as a sophomore, the 3200 meter and 1600 meter relays finished as all-staters with no seniors and only two juniors. The two returning seniors had great seasons. Jon Lopez was great on relays and ended up 3rd in the league in the 300 hurdles and Pat Gauthier was league runner-up in the pole vault. The future is very bright for this talented group.
The girls team continued to dominate everyone but Williamston in the league and everyone in the region. School records were set by Sara Wegener in the shot put, Hannah Sailar in the pole vault and Megan Heeder in the 3200 meter run. The seniors on this year's squad all had great seasons and played major roles in the teams success over the past four years. Annie Hanis, Jessica Doody, Lizzy Balboa, Sara Wegener and Megan Whybra all will be missed a lot. They can all go in the school in the years to come and see their names on two regional championship trophies.

http://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/Michigan/

2010 Track Schedule

3/15 First day of practice
3/31 MSU True Team Indoor Invite
4/17 Lakewood Invite
4/20 Lakewood
4/24 Wyoming Park Relays
4/27 Corunna
4/30 MSU Invite
5/4 Portland
5/7 Pewamo-Westphalia Invite
5/11 Williamston
5/18 Perry
5/21 Regionals @ Laingsburg
5/24 St. Johns JV
5/26 CAAC @ Lakewood
5/29 MITCA @ Kent City
6/2 Honor Roll
6/5 State Meet

2010 Middle School Track Schedule

April 23 Fri. 4:30 @ Jackson Catholic vs. Jackson NW
April 28 Wed. 4:30 @ Fowlerville
May 5 Wed. 4:30 @ Holt Middle School vs. Ionia
May 7 Fri. The boys came into the State Meet after suprising a lot of people by finishing third at regionals (despite losing the top 3 from last year's team). The boys proved they were no fluke and finished in 10th place, which was also the second best finish in school history. Last year the boys were 12th and the girls 13th.

The individual highlight was once again Megan Heeder who finished in 2nd place behind only two-time defending champin Devon John of Allendale. Megan's state runner-up performance was the highest State Meet finish ever by a Cougar in XC. It was a great race for Megan as she and the two Allendale runners pulled away from a pack of eight at the mile and a half and then Megan held of numerous challenges for second place and proved once again just how tough she is. She was 40th in last year's race.

The leading runner for the boys was Jimmy Hicks who ran a personal best time of 17:21. It was the first time in his short career that he was the first finisher for the team. He was followed in short order by Austin Winter, Zach Zingsheim and Ben Flint who also ran a PR. The tight pack did the trick as the Cougars once again surprised everyone by finishing in the top ten. Alex Thompson was the fifth runner. Freshman, Emma Frost was the second runner for the girls team in 61st place followed by Adrienne Powell, Catherine Swiderski and Allie Brown as scorers.

It was agreat season for both teams.

Both Teams Qualify For States

Heeder Regional Champ

Both the boys and girls teams continued their streak of consecutive State Meet appearances. The girls qualified by finishing second at regionals, It is the fourth year in a row and ninth time in 11 years the girls have qualified. The boys ran their streak to six straight years by finishing third in the regional meet. Lansing Catholic is one of just a handful of schools to have both boys and girls qualified four years in a row.

The individual highlight of the day was Megan Heeder running away from the field to win convincingly. She was the first individual regional champion in XC for the Cougars since Rachel Kirvan won in 2000. The only other individual medalist for the Cougars was Austin Winter who finished 15th. The fact that combined the boys and girls only had two medalists but were the only school in the region to qualify both teams shows what great TEAMS we have.

Both teams have overcome many obstacles on their way to this accomplishment and should be extremely proud of it. They should also be focussed on having great efforts at the State Finals and placing both teams as high as possible.

Megan Heeder Sets Junior Record

Megan Heeder broke the LCHS junior record with a time of 18:51 at The Greater Lansing Championship. Megan placed 6th and broke the old record of 18:52 which was set in 1999 by Rachel Kirvan. Megan is the second fastest Cougar of all-time and only the second to run below 19 minutes. The all-time record is 18:42 run by Rachel Kirvan in 2000.

Heeder's record run helped pace the Cougars to their highest Greater Lansing finish since 2000, as they placed 7th in the 35-team field. The Cougar girls haveranked in the top ten in the state in division 3 throughout the season.

The boys team finished 15th out of 35 teams.

Results

All results can be found at Playmakers.com

Grrreat Job Cougars at MI Catholic XC Invite!

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5376479148878718146" style="FLOAT: left; When the day was over five girls had earned All-State honors and one school record had fallen.

Megan Heeder qualified in the 3200 meter relay and in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs. She started the day by helping the 3200 meter relay to a 13th place finish and a season best time of 10:05 and she ended the day by finishing fourth in the 3200 with a Lansing Catholic school record time of 11:27.83, breaking the oldest girls record on the books which was set by Cindy Sprague in 1976.

One event later the girls 1600 relay team of Monica Lopez, Jamie Holtham, Adrienne Powell and MaryAlice Fata ran a season best time of 4:10.26 to finish in 5th place.

The Cougars were one of only three teams to qualify in all four relays. Eventhough they only made the medal stand in the 1600 relay they still managed good finishes in all the relays and ran season-best times in each event. The 800 relay team finished in 10th place, the 400 relay in 14th place and the 3200 relay in 13th place. Catherine Swiderski ran in the 1600 and finsihed in 5:40 but that was after running a team-best relay leg of 2:28 leading off the 3200 meter relay. In teh shot put Sara Wegener finished a very respectable 13th place with a personal best of 34-10. Annie Hanis made it to the semi-finals of the 100 meter dash.

Garrett Swain was the lone boys qualifier. he finished one spot out of the medeals in 9th place with a jump of 20-10 and he jumped 5-11 in the high jump.

Garrett Swain and Megan Heeder - Honor Roll Champs !
See full results of Honor Roll Meet at Playmakers.com.

Garrett Swain with no run throughs or warm ups won the long jump with a jump of 20-9 3/4 and Megan Heeder ran away from the field in the last mile of the 3200 to win with a time of 11:38. In the 1600 meter relay the team of Monica Lopez, Jamie Holtham, MaryAlice Fata and Adrienne Powell finished 4th in a season best 4:10 and in the 3200 meter relay the squad of Catherine Swiderski, Allie Brown, Aurilee McCarus and Megan Heeder ran a season best of 10:11 to take 4th as well.

REGIONAL CHAMPS !!!!!
Girls Win First Regional Since 2000

The Cougar girls dominated the field to win the school's first regional championship since 2000. The Cougars finished in first with 120 points which was almost as much as second-place Stockbridge (68 points) and third-place St. Charles (63 points) combined. The Cougars qualified for states in all four relays and had four indivdual qualifiers.

On the boys side the boys finished in eighth place with 38 points. Garrett Swain won the long jump and was second in the high jump to lead the way. He qualified for states in both events and was the lone Cougar qualifier on the boys side.

The highlight of the meet was the girls 1600 meter run which saw freshman Catherine Swiderski run an incredible 20 second PR to win with a time of 5:25.31. She finished with an amazing final 100 meters and passed teammate Megan Heeder in the last 15 meters. Heeder was second in a time of 5:25.56 which was a seven second PR for her.

The race immediately following the 1600 was the 400 relay which was the Cougars other victory. The foursome of Annie Hanis, Jessica Doody, Mary Alice Fata and Lexi Solomon won in a time of 52.32. The Cougars finished 2nd in the 3200 meter relay, the 800 meter relay and the 1600 meter relay. In all of the relays the teams ran season bests and eclipsed the additional qualifying standards for the events. In addition to Heeder and Swiderski in the 1600 the other individual qualifiers were Sara Wegener who finished 2nd in the shot put, Annie Hanis who was second in the 100 meter dash and Heeder who was second in the 3200 meter run. Heeder qualifed in 3 events as she was also on the 3200 meter relay. Mary Alice Fata became only the second Cougar ever to qualify on all four relays. Monica Lopez was on three relays as she led off the 3200, 400 and 1600 meter relays. Adrienne Powell and Lexi Solomon were both on two squads and Annie Hanis, Jessica Doody, Allie Brown and Aurilee McCarus each ran on a relay that qualified.

Coaches Comments:

Our teams were very good in this meet and came ready to succeed and that is what they did. While the state meet qualifiers get the most attention we had so many others step up and have their best day of the season. The boys distance runners ran the best they have all season, and Hunter Puma had a great day finishing sixth the 100 hurdles and fourth in the 300 hurdles to name a few.

Our girls qualified for the MITCA state meet and they should do very well because they are a complete team. They have quality performers in virtually every event and not just one but three or more at every event. It is amazing that our team could score 120 points and only have 2 first place finishes. We have had teams in the past that won many more events but none scored close to 120 points. Our team has a lot to be proud of this was a total team effort.

The boys had 2 relays that had I thought had a shot of qualifying and in each case they barely missed. In the 3200 meter realy the boys really stepped up and gave a great effort as did the guys in teh 400 relay. An encouraging thing about those relays is that many of them will be back next year.

Jessica Doody Sets School Record in Pole Vault

At Perry the girls team won by a score of 111-26 to move their league mark to 2-2 and the boys lost by a score of 74 -63. The highlight of the meet was the first 7-foot vault for a girl at LCHS by Jessica Doody. Jessica also won the long jump with a jump of 15-61/4 and finished 3rd in the 100. The girls won 14 of the 17 events.

On the boys side Garrett Swain continued his undefeated season in the long jump with a jump of 21-5. Freshman, Austin Winter ran PR of 4:44 in the 1600.

Monday the Cougars will end the dual meet season at Lakewood and then head to regionals at Maple Valley on Friday.

Girls Place 3rd at PW Invite

The girls team finished in 3rd at the PW Invite just four points behind runner-up Pewamo Westphalia. Middleville Thornapple Kellogg finished in first. The only individual event winner was Megan Heeder who continued her spectacular season with wins in the the 1600 and 3200. Heeder also lead off the 3200 meter relay which also finished in first. Allie Brown, Aurilee McCarus and Mary Alice Fata were also on the squad.

On the boys side the only winner was Garrett Swain who captured the long jump. In the 3200 meter run Mikey Castellani and Zach Harvey went 3-4 with PRs of 10:25 and 10:26. The boys finished in 7th overall.

The meet also served as the dual meet between Portland and LCHS. The girls came out a winner and the boys took a loss.

Garrett Swain Breaks School Record in Long Jump

Garrett Swain broke a school record in the long jump that was twice as old as he is. By jumping 21-8 on his first jump of the meet Garrett erased the old record set by Steve Fox in 1971. The record-setting jump came only after he nearly equalled the school record in the HJ by clearing 6-4 on his first attempt and having some good attempts at 6-6. Garret won the long jump and finished 2nd in the high jump. He also finished 4th in the 110 hurdles.

In a meet that featured seven other teams that were all a lot bigger than LCHS the points were harder to come by but there were many good performances for the boys and girls. Individual point scorers for the boys were Sam Maki who was third in the shot, Eddie Brennan sixth in both shot and disc including PR tosses of 43-10 and 122-3, and Austin Winter, fifth in the 1600 and 8th in the 800.

On the girls side the relays were big point scorers as the Cougars finished 2nd in three of the four relays. In the 3200 relay the team of Megan Heeder, Aurilee McCarus, Allie Brown and Mary Alice Fata ran a season-best 10:25 and finished only behind Dexter. In the 400 relay the squad of Annie Hanis, Jessica Doody, Fata and Lexi Solomon were second behind Chelsea with a time of 52.29 and in the 1600 relay the team of Monica Lopez, Jamie Holtham, Adrienne Powell and Fata were second again to Chelsea. The 800 relay would have been another good finish but third runner Adrienne Powell fell during the exchange. To her credit she got up and ran the race and the Cougars ran a time of 1:56 and still beat two teams. Despite being scraped up Adrienne gutted out 6th place in the 400 in 66.38 and led off the 1600 relay in 63.3.

Other individual scorers for the girls were Sara Wegener (4th ) and Taylor Maylee (8th) in the shot. Taylor came back with a season-best 96-8 for 5th in the disc and Wegener was 7th with 93-8. Both girls have a good shot at states in both events. Monica Lopez was 6th in the 100 and 3rd in the 400 (65.11) and Lizzy Balboa was 7th in the 400. Elizabeth Warriner was 8th in the 800 and Megan Heeder ran a great race in the 3200 to get 2nd place in a PR of 11:53.

Coaches Comments:
This was a horrible week for everyone at our school and our kids can be proud of the way they they competed in this meet. Things started slowly but once everyone got going the efforts were certainly there. I was thrilled with the throwers getting seond in the "fat man" relay and I know the other kids on the team were into it and impressed. It was a good ending.

We have now had 2 meets cancelled for weather so we don't have many meets under our belts but the results are still pretty darn good and will get better.

Garrett breaking the long jump record in great. He can be very proud of the fact that he broke a record that no one else has broken for 38 years. He has some more big achievements ahead and I predict he will put the record out over 22 feet and then we will see if that can stand for another 38 years.

Outstanding Performances at Lakewood

Full Results:
http://michigancrosscountry.com/michigan_track_cross_country_forum/showthread.php?tid=702
Coaches Comments:
The girls and boys teams had an outstanding day at the Lakewood Invite. In the first meet of the year with nice weather the times dropped and the distances and heights were bigger. Considering how early it is in the season the performances were very good and this should be just the beginning.

For the boys the throwers and jumpers are all at or above the marks they had last year. Sam Maki had a PR in the disc and was 3rd in the shot. Garrett set the meet record at Lakewood on a bad board and is poised to go well into the 21s and is consistently jumping at 6-0 and 6-2. In the relays we have a lot of inexperience but the times are pretty good and there is a lot more to come. For instance our 800 relay had 2 freshmen, a sophomore and junior Jon Lopez who is the only one with HS sprint relay experience. Cedric Lee had a great meet with a 4th in the 100 and an awesome anchor leg in the 800 relay to move us into 2nd. In the distances Austin Winter had another strong meet and Mikey had a gutsy 800, 1600, 3200 triple.

On the girls side we got tons of great performances. In the shot we had 3 of the top 5 places and all three equalled the regional additional qualifier mark which is something we have never had. Sara Wegener was the big star winning the the shot in 34-7 (which is the state meet additional qualifier mark) and the disc. In the high jump, freshman Courtney Russell competed in her first HJ competition and won it with a jump of 4-10. In the relays the time of 1:52 in the 800 is very good for this time of year as is the 4:18 they ran in the 1600 relay. The 400 relay ran 53.5 but was DQed for passing out of the zone. Considering that the handoff cost time it is reasonable to assume our time would have been better. Even so a time of 53.5 is very good for this time of year. We should be taking four relays to states and should have the potential to score in all of them. The best part is that none of the relays is set as far as personel and we have plenty of options for all of them. In the 3200 meter run Megan Heeder won with a time of 11:59 which betters the state meet additional qualifier time - again great for this early in the season. Some of the other notable performances were Jamie Holtham finishing 2nd in her first open 400 with a time of 64, one place ahead of defending league champion Ashly Pifer of Lakewood and Mary Alice Fata who ran an anchor leg of 61.4 despite being way ahead when she got the baton. Mary Alice also on all 4 relays and ran very well on all of them. Annie Hanis finished high in the 100 and 200 and Adrienne Powell was 4th in the 200 and ran a 63 in the relay and ran on the 800 relay. Catherine Swiderski also had a big day running the 3200 relay, the 1600 and the 3200 where she placed 5th - she and Mikey Castellani on the boys side each logged 3.5 miles of races on the day.

The great part about this meet is that so many people contributed to this effort and when we win the MITCA meet we will need a lot of contributors, not just a few stars - but a whole team !

All of this is great news and says we have a good season ahead for boys and girls.

The goals for the girls team to win regionals, win the MITCA D3 championship and place highly at the state meet are all within reach.

Boys and Girls Lose at Corunna

The boys and girls both lost their league opener to Corunna. The Boys lost by a score of 87-50 and the girls lost 78.5-57.5. Individual event winners were Garrett Swain in the LJ, HJ and HH, Austin Winter in the 800 and 1600, Megan Heeder in the 1600 and Lizzy Balboa in the LJ. In the relays the boys won the 3200 meter relay with a team of Nick Lemmer, Zach Harvey, Lois Savona and Kevin Bergeron and the girls won the 400 relay with a team of Annie Hanis, Mary Alice Fata, Monica Lopez and Lexi Solomon. They were also winners in the 3200 relay with Heeder, Aurilee McCarus, Allie Brown and Catherine Swiderski and the 1600 relay with McCarus, Jamie Holtham, Brown and Lopez.

Cougar MS Mile Championship

Cougar Mile Results

63 runners participated in the first annual Cougar Mile.
